Accommodating Thermal Movement

Mechanical Advantages of the Grooved Pipe Joining Method

How It Can Be Used to the Piping System Designer’s Benefit

Pipe subjected to temperature changes will be placed in a condition of stress, exerting potentially damaging reactive forces and moments on components or equipment. Victaulic's grooved pipe connectors have several mechanical advantages for reliably absorbing pipe movement due to thermal expansion and / or contraction. These advantages include:

* Pipe design flexibility

* Reduced stress on the piping system

* A more compact, inspectable and productive method of installation over other pipe-joining methods such as welding

* Conforms to industry practices in industrial building services

The key to effectively accommodating pipe thermal expansion and contraction in a building is to allow the predictable, controlled movement of the piping itself. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, and the selection of a specific method is based upon the engineer, the type of piping system and the project parameters.

Victaulic grooved couplings accommodate pipe thermal expansion & contraction in four ways:

1) providing an expansion joint utilizing grooved mechanical pipe components
2) allowing the system to “free-float”
3) utilizing the linear movement/deflection capabilities of flexible grooved couplings
4) providing an expansion loop utilizing grooved mechanical components

Why are grooved couplings a great alternative to welded U-shaped expansion loops, welded offsets, expansion joints & rubber bellows?

Grooved pipe couplings are easier and faster to install over welding, accommodate movement within the design capability of the grooved coupling, all done within the product’s "free range of motion.” Piping system movement caused by pipe thermal expansion and contraction can be accommodated in smaller spaces, with low stress on the components.
