DeBeers - Snap Lake Diamond Mine

The Snap Lake Mine, De Beers’ first mine outside of Africa, is unique in Canada. The mine commenced commercial production in January 2008 and is Canada’s first completely underground diamond mine, processing 1.1 million tonnes and 1.4 million carats worth of diamonds annually.

With a long-term and proven track record of reliability on mining projects worldwide, a full range of Victaulic couplings, valves and fittings were confidently specified and used on a variety of services. The ease of installation of Victaulic products enabled the contractor to maximize productivity, helping ensure the mine would be operational and generating revenue for De Beers as soon as possible. Victaulic products will simplify ongoing maintenance as fittings can be easily removed and replaced at multiple locations on the piping line.

On compressed air and water systems the mine recently began to use installation-ready Style 177 flexible couplings. With no need for disassembly and no loose parts, these couplings allow for fast, easy pipe connections. The coupling design of the Style 177 greatly reduces risk of pinched gaskets that could result in compressed air leaks which typically cost mines thousands of dollars per year in additional energy costs. In the process plant, Victaulic rigid and flexible Advanced Groove System (AGS) couplings joined schedule 80 abrasive slurry piping lines using the Victaulic Vic-Ring piping method to maintain full pipe wall thickness. With only 2 housings and 2 bolts, AGS couplings ensure rapid installation and could be visually inspected for correct assembly.
