Victaulic Case Studies

Owned and operated by Alberta Health Services, the new $198.4 million Edson Healthcare Centre opened in November 2016 and offers a variety of health services, including a 24-bed acute care wing, a 76-bed continuing care wing, kidney dialysis treatment, inter-professional primary healthcare, and community health programs.

Construction of the facility started in late 2014, with the contractor, Strathcona Mechanical, facing an aggressive six- to eight-week timeline to complete the mechanical portion of the job. Having typically welded all jobs in past, the contractor saw the value in the using the Victaulic grooved system to ensure the job stayed on track and to reduce total installed costs. Unlike with welding, Victaulic required no hot works permits and could be installed much faster and easier without needing costly specialized labour.

To join hot and chilled water systems to 6"/DN150, Victaulic Installation-Ready™ couplings enabled rapid joining while allowing for visual verification of a successful joint. Victaulic fittings, Series 716 check valves and Style 761 MasterSealTM butterfly valves created a complete and reliable system solution. For domestic water applications, Victaulic Style 607 couplings and Style 608N butterfly valves were used for copper connections, while Style 89 couplings enabled joining for larger 6"/DN150 stainless steel pipe. Further time savings and cost reduction was achieved on installation of terminal coil units by using three-piece Victaulic Koil-Kit™ Coil Packs over traditional assemblies.
