Fox Creek Frac

Oil producer Encana uses fracturing as a major technology to develop the Duvernay gas play located in Fox Creek, Alberta. In 2016, a new drill pad for a gas well was constructed and required a HDPE piping system for produced water.

As with all their projects, Encana looks to make use of innovation to create efficiency and minimize environmental impact. The contractor, and master fuser, Fraction Energy Services, saw the value in joining this DR11 HDPE system using Victaulic® Refuse-to-Fuse™ Style 905 couplings instead of fusion.

Eliminating the need for fusing, the Victaulic solution installed quickly and easily, taking only 2 minutes per 4"/100mm joint versus 15 minutes to fuse. Similarly, a 4"/100mm 90 degree elbow with 2 connections took 4 minutes using Victaulic versus 30 minutes to fuse, representing over 7 times the installation efficiency. This speed of installation was a huge advantage to both the owner and the contractor.

Safety is a number one priority to both Encana and Fraction Energy Services.. The Victaulic mechanical joining solution contributed to jobsite and worker safety by eliminating the use of chain saws to buck up the pipe as they would have with fusing.

For this application, Encana can reuse the joints and take them to the next site, which they view as a reusable asset that can be used on many jobs to come. The contractor estimates after 2 uses the couplings will pay for themselves.
