Victaulic Case Studies

In October 2015, the 1,800,000 sq.ft./167,225 sq.m. Humber River Hospital opened as the first fully digital hospital in North America. With over 600 beds, the $1.75 billion mega project represents a new generation of state-of-the-art healthcare facilities designed to meet growing healthcare needs.

The contractor, Modern Niagara, was tasked with providing plumbing, HVAC, medical gas, and fire protection systems for this fast track Private Public Partnership (P3) project. This included a 6,300-ton cooling plant, a 56,000 MBH heating plant, 71 air handling units, and 6,000 plumbing fixtures.

After having success with the Victaulic grooved system on major hospital projects in the past, the contractor elected to use it again to ensure quick and easy joining of the piping systems. With solutions addressing a wide variety of piping materials, sizes and applications, Victaulic was the clear choice.

Large diameter condenser water piping up to 30"/DN750 was roll grooved in the contractor's shop using a Victaulic production grooving tool, and joined with Victaulic Advanced Groove System (AGS) couplings. Featuring only 2 housings and 2 bolts per joint, AGS couplings provided the fastest and strongest solution. The ability to pre-fabricate and deliver system sections directly to the jobsite was another big advantage.

Victaulic NSF approved products allowed for efficient joining of 2-3"/DN50-DN80 copper and 4-6"/DN100-DN150 stainless steel for the domestic water system. For the heating and cooling systems, Victaulic Installation-ReadyTM couplings maximized productivity and ensured this complex product stayed on schedule.
