Sunshine Coast University Hospital

Sunshine Coast University Hospital will be a tertiary teaching hospital, servicing the Sunshine Coast region, as the hub in an integrated network of accessible healthcare. The hospital will open with approximately 450 beds in 2016, with an expansion to over 700 beds by 2020. The hospital will allow future expansion up to a total of 900 beds.

Project design variations resulted in a tight installation schedule, which was eased substantially by the speed of installation of grooved pipe joining. As a long-term installer of Victaulic grooved products, the contractor AE Smith utilized the Victaulic grooved system due to proven cost savings realized over past installed projects, and saved approximately 30% on overall installed costs over traditional welded/flanged systems. Cost savings were particularly evident on the large diameter piping which reached 24”/600 mm in diameter on this installation.

AE Smith also commissioned Victaulic Construction Piping Services (CPS) and Engineering Services departments to provide required seismic, thermal movement and building settlement calculations. The Victaulic Style 155 expansion joint was utilized to accommodate substantial movement required on the 20”/500 mm diameter chilled water lines crossing a bridge that links the central energy plant to the main hospital. Style 155 expansion joints were custombuilt to fully accommodate the calculated movement and deflection within the piping system. The use of Victaulic expansion joints eliminated the need for expensive engineered stainless steel expansion units, resulting in a cost savings of 60%.
