Tunnel Under Vistula River
The new 1300 metre long tunnel under the Vistula River, the first tunnel in Poland that benefited from the unique Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology, is a key element to transmit waste water from the left bank districts of Warsaw to the Czajka waste water treatment plant, located on the right side of the river. In the tunnel, with an inner diameter of 4.5 metres, are two routes of pipelines, with a diameter of 1.6 metres each. It will also include the track for a service railway car, ventilation systems, closed circuit television and other installations. In order to have a safe, fast and reliable installation of the water, compressed air and slurry lines, Victaulic pipe joining system was selected. Installing Victaulic products allowed contractors, PRG Metro and Hydrobudowa 9SA, to benefit from some of the unique characteristics other joining methods don’t have. By installing Victaulic Style 75 and Style 77 flexible couplings, they were able to accommodate the system’s curvature and movement. Because using Victaulic products only requires tightening of two bolts and nuts to join a piece of pipe, the installation of the three piping systems could be carried out much faster than when welding or flanging, thus compressing the construction schedule. Because Victaulic products don’t require hotworks to join pipes, jobsite safety was guaranteed and none of the installers were exposed to hazardous fumes. Employing Victaulic products resulted in a speedy and reliable installation that not only helped to reduce total installed cost but also helped to secured jobsite safety.
