Beijing Olympics National Stadium
The Bird’s Nest, home of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 29th Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China is an advanced and world-class stadium, symbolizing a new page in China’s construction history. Officially named National Stadium, the 100,000 seat stadium posed significant challenges to designers and contractors because of the structure’s unique design. The stadium’s one-of-a-kind architecture has coined its nickname The Bird’s Nest. Beijing Olympic Committee members and contractors specified Victaulic mechanical pipe joining systems for the stadium’s HVAC system because of its ease of installation and alignment. Victaulic is also playing a vital role in protecting the stadium’s piping system from seismic activity, wind and other earth movements, all of which are common in China. By using Victaulic systems, construction schedules were compressed to fit a tight timeline. Victaulic Construction Piping Services (CPS) also helped to manage and control the project effectively to ensure the installation was completed in a safe, timely and environmentally-friendly manner to match the green theme of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
