How Diverse Perspectives Deliver Better Solutions: Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day

Posted on June 23rd, 2026

Every June 23rd, the world recognizes International Women in Engineering Day as a moment to celebrate the women who have shaped the built environment, broken barriers in technical fields, and paved the way for the next generation of engineers. At Victaulic, we’re proud to be a part of that conversation.

Engineering has long been one of the most male-dominated professions in the world, but that landscape is changing and Victaulic is focused on driving that change from within. Across our global operations, women are leading product development, accelerating construction productivity, mentoring the next generation, and challenging the status quo with every project they touch.

In honor of International Women in Engineering Day, we’re highlighting the experiences of several Victaulic leaders who embody what it means to thrive as a woman in engineering and what it means to actively build a more inclusive industry for those who follow.

Diversity Drives Innovation

The connection between diverse teams and better engineering outcomes isn’t just intuitive, it’s observable. When people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives collaborate on complex problems, the solutions they reach are often more creative, more resilient, and more practical than those produced by homogeneous groups.

Susan Schierwagen, Vice President of Engineering Operations at Victaulic, has lived this truth throughout a distinguished career in fire protection engineering. Her path through the sprinkler industry is a testament to what’s possible when talent and determination meet an organization willing to invest in its people.

Women in engineering- Susan

Susan’s words capture a conviction that runs throughout Victaulic’s approach to engineering and talent development: when everyone has a seat at the table, the work reflects it. The company has made sustained investments in programs that support women’s advancement, and the results speak for themselves through the careers of the leaders who have grown within those programs.

Community as a Foundation for Leadership

For many women in engineering, community is the foundation that transforms technical skill into organizational influence. Formal mentorship, peer networks, and access to senior leaders can make the difference between a promising individual contributor and a confident engineering leader.

Victaulic’s commitment to building that community is evident in initiatives like the Women’s Business Network, which brings together women across the organization to share experiences, grow professionally, and support each other through the challenges unique to women in technical fields. For those who’ve participated, the impact is personal and tangible.

Building the Field for the Next Generation

International Women in Engineering Day isn’t only a celebration; it’s a call to action. For Victaulic, honoring the women who have contributed to our engineering excellence means doubling down on the structures that allow more women to find their way into the field, thrive within it, and eventually shape its future.

To every woman in engineering, thank you for your perspective, your ingenuity, and your leadership. The field is stronger because you’re in it.
