The Shelby Water Treatment Plant (WTP) provides potable water for more than 20,000 homes and businesses in the City of Shelby and Boiling Springs, North Carolina. The plant has the ability to treat up to 12 million gallons of raw water, pulled from the First Broad River, each day. If necessary, the City has an emergency raw water intake line from the Broad River near Boiling Springs that connects to the plant. The Shelby WTP is the first water treatment plant in North Carolina to achieve the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification.
Recently, the Shelby WTP underwent a $17-million construction and upgrade project to improve the facility. The last upgrade to the plant with completed in the 1990s, and there were many areas of the facility that could be enhanced to allow the plant to expand its capacity and operate more efficiently. Upgrades included improvements to plant automation, replacement of filter control valves, the construction of two new clear wells, and a new high service pump station.
Victaulic partnered to deliver grooved couplings, fittings, and valves, that provided value engineered solutions for the filter effluent system and clear well valve vault. Throughout the clear well valve vault, HDR was able to maintain the required valve access without the use of traditional dismantling joints. This enabled a space-saving design in a confined area. The Victaulic Series W719 Butterfly Valves and Style 31 AWWA Couplings were the most efficient and sustainable solution for the 30” ductile iron piping system running through the valve vault. Victaulic solution eliminated the need for costly and bulky M11 harnesses and pipe anchors, which would have required more excavation and a larger system footprint.
