Burns & McDonnell Visits Victaulic

Posted on September 15, 2020

On September 14th, 2020, Victaulic hosted a group of key individuals from Burns & McDonnell Energy Division representing engineering, construction, and estimating, at its Kansas City branch for a hands-on experience. The goal of the visit was to showcase Victaulic’s capabilities in product innovation, fabrication, coordination, and estimation for the power, and oil & gas markets.

Burns & McDonnell is an employee-owned engineering, procurement, and construction company (EPC), headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The EPC provides services, such as architecture, commissioning, construction, engineering, operations & maintenance, and program management to a wide variety of industries throughout the globe. These industries include water, transportation, chemical, oil & gas, aviation, food & beverage, and power. Engineering News-Record listed Burns & McDonnell as one of the Top 100 Design-Build Firms (#6) and Top 500 Design Firms (#9) in 2020. Additionally, for the fifth consecutive year, ENR ranked the EPC as No. 1 in the Power category.

Burns & McDonnell had the opportunity to have hands-on experience with Victaulic products, services, and fabrication capabilities. Product demonstrations and applications were completed during the visit; covering: Victaulic fabrication capabilities, Installation-Ready™, AGS on 14” Victaulic Couplings, Fittings, and Grooved End Valves. Additionally, the group witnessed Victaulic catalog items, such as outlet fittings, vibration isolation pump drops, large diameter fittings, non-metallic pipe joints, and options of specialty pipe coatings and linings.

Hydraulic pressure tests were performed on couplings and valves on carbon steel pipe, and Victaulic Press System for small diameter stainless steel, and products designed for HDPE piping.  The visit also consisted of presentations regarding Victaulic’s Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) and estimating capabilities.

In recent years, Burns & McDonnell has acquired well-established construction firms allowing them to self perform the installation on Energy projects. This has shifted its focus to designing for construction and allows them to develop more competitive bids in the Energy marketplace. Victaulic’s Dan Christian commented that “Burns & McDonnell sees Victaulic applications as a path forward to be more competitive in bids while meeting system design, safety, and reliability requirements. The knowledge and experiences gained from the visit will help them during the bid, design, and construction phases of Energy projects going forward.”
