There’s No “I” in BIM

Actually there is and unfortunately it’s sometimes an afterthought.      

In today’s B.I.M. arena, along with dimensional accuracy of content, there is a host of other data that should be represented in your content. For instance one of the software packages I deal with on a daily basis is Autodesk® Fabrication CADmep. The dimensional aspect is only a small percentage of the complete data rich content. Some other elements are pricing, material, labor, connectivity, insulation specifications, hanger specifications… etc. You’re not dealing with pretty pictures anymore. If you truly want to practice B.I.M., you had better make sure the “I” (information) is represented as well.

 

Data rich model within Autodesk® Fabrication CADmep.

It may take more time upfront, gathering the necessary data to complete the content, but in the end you’ll be rewarded with a data rich model that not only looks great but also provides a wealth of information regarding estimating, ordering, construction and eventually maintenance.

Ralph Schoch

Ralph is the Revit, Technology, and Internal Support Manager and a 20-year veteran with the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team at Victaulic. For 16 years Ralph has been developing 3D piping system layouts. His interest in 3D modeling led him to begin developing for Revit in 2009. Ralph leads a team of people developing Revit families that allow engineers and contractors to design piping systems within Revit using Victaulic products. These families have been used around the world from engineering to construction with full fabrication from the Revit model. In addition to Revit, Ralph has experience in Navisworks, Fabrication CADmep, Inventor, Solidworks, and Bentley Autoplant. He is a board member for the Lehigh Valley BIM Professionals Group and is a member of Autodesk Developers Network and Professional Member of AUGI. Ralph holds an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Drafting and Design.
