Dry Pipe Fire Protection Sprinkler Systems for High-Rack Storage

The February 2015 issue of Sprinkler Age featured a contributed article by Daniel Wake, product manager for sprinklers and devices at Victaulic, and Dr. H.C. Kung, prior Victaulic Fellow. Food processing companies, wholesale food distributors and grocery store chains commonly use cold storage warehouses to facilitate storage and distribution. After choosing a wet pipe or dry pipe system, the design process for an effective fire protection sprinkler system considers the commodity hazard level and ceiling height of the warehouse. Higher ceiling and storage height pose a greater fire challenge and require more water to protect the stored commodities. In the event of rack storage fires, dry pipe fire protection sprinkler system performance depends on the commodities stored, storage height, ceiling height, aisle space, sprinkler design, sprinkler temperature rating, sprinkler sensitivity (RTI), sprinkler K factor, sprinkler discharge pressure and water delay time. In dry-pipe systems, the use of large K-factor sprinklers shorten the water delay time, enhance water penetration ability against fire plumes and result in superior performance.
